Boehringer Ingelheim Fremont is the rapidly growing US arm of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Biologics Business Unit. We are a fully integrated biologics operation with over 500 scientist and specialists, covering cutting edge early- to late stage CMC development, clinical and commercial drug substance and drug product manufacturing, medical device assembly for combination products and packaging operations.   

We are continuing our rapid growth, investing over  $200m into the expansion of our capacity and capabilities, and creating approximately 200 new jobs.  

Driving this growth is an exciting pipeline of multiple Boehringer Ingelheim novel biologic entities (NBEs) and biosimilars, as well as, a growing diverse portfolio of therapeutics we develop and manufacture for other leading pharma and biotech companies. This includes multiple commercial product launches planned over the next couple of  years, for which we can tap into Boehringer Ingelheim’s unique experience of having brought 30+ biologics to market globally.

Responsible for the management of cell culture development labs including the bioreactor lab, medium preparation lab, instrument rooms, cold rooms, freezers and stock rooms.  Responsible for the oversight of lab equipment and instrument upkeep.  Manage work orders and vendor maintenance and repair activities.  Responsible for cell culture medium service activities including scheduling, coordination, preparation and stocking of all medium related chemicals and consumables.  This position will have supervisory responsibility managing a team of contingent workers to support the different areas of the lab management activities.  Be the point of contact and be accountable for all cell culture development lab facility related topics and issues.  Overall, this position will have the ownership and foresight to maintain the development labs in an efficient working order, and make continuous improvements in order to maintain the labs state of the art.

Duties & Responsibilities\:


  • Supervise cell culture development labs in terms of equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, work orders, coordinating and working with vendors to perform maintenance and repairs.  

  • Manages and maintains supply inventory and ensures reliable supply for recurring consumables, specialty consumables and cell culture medium raw materials. 

  • Establish an efficient and organized system for managing supply inventory. 

  • Manage Cell Culture Mylab assignments and activities.

  • Establish best lab practices, guidelines and operating procedures for all users.  Develop and introduce new and innovative practices and procedures for existing and new equipment and instruments.  Oversee and enforce lab safety practices and adhere to EH&S guidelines.

  • Interface effectively with partner departments within Process Science to distribute work, assignments and responsibilities related to the common use of lab and facilities.  Align and establish common procedures.

  • Provide leadership and supervise a group of lab technicians.  Ensure worker safety including training, supervision and control of safety guidelines.  Effectively manage contingent worker personnel to complete all assignments and tasks timely and with uncompromising quality.

  • Manage the cell culture medium service to meet all project needs.  Produces consistent and reliable high quality media with established and reproducible procedures. Align procedures with pilot and manufacturing scale operations to ensure transferability and scalability.

  • Identify, propose, and execute process and procedural changes to improve equipment, instrument and cell culture media performance, robustness, and reliability.  Also make continuous improvements to lab operations, supply ordering and inventory stocking.

  • Collaborates with different cell culture groups (BIFI and BIB) in Process Science and Manufacturing to learn, optimize, improve and implement best practices.  Establish strong working relationship with Supply Chain, Engineering & Technology, Manufacturing, Quality, and EH&S.  Leverage cross-functional resource to accomplish assignments and goals.






  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution with minimum of four to eight (4-8) years of experience in life sciences industry; in lieu of years of industry experience, Master’s Degree from an accredited institution with minimum of three (3) years of experience in life industry will be considered.

  • Minimum of one to three (1-3) years in leading projects

  • Minimum of one to three (1-3) years in successfully managing lab personnel required

  • Proven skills building and maintaining productive relationships with organizational partners such as Manufacturing and Quality

  • Ability to lead effectively in a matrixed organization

  • Excellent communication and management skills

  • Understanding of validation of biopharmaceutical facilities, equipment and process
