Job Overview

The Corporate Technology Center (CTC) Materials Process & Design group at TE Connectivity in Fremont, CA invites applicants for a Sr. material development scientist. TE Connectivity is the home of well-known brands of electric and electronic components with a wide span of applications from automotive to appliance. The CTC Materials Process & Design group plays an integral role within the company through supporting and developing leading edge polymer formulation and manufacturing technologies related to polymeric material and plastics processing innovation. Our team of experts offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and advancement of original knowledge in the field.

We seek an energetic and creative person to work closely with other team members from the material development and processing teams to develop new polymeric materials along with developing new process technologies for applications in TE's products spanning across all business units. You will also provide consulting and support to TE's business units on polymeric materials, manufacturing, and plastics processing issues. You will possess strong technical expertise in polymer science, plastics engineering, or a similar field of study and enjoy hands-on work in a lab environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct novel polymeric and composite material development research with the goal of attaining improved material properties and/or additional functionality
  • Develop innovative plastics processing methodologies from R&D into manufacturing
  • Perform experiments in a lab environment to develop novel plastics processing methodologies and test new material formulations
  • Work with business unit's development engineers and manufacturing organizations to transition successful technology to large-scale manufacturing and the end-user market
  • Ability to be a technical expert, lead projects, or serve as a team member of complex, large, or high impact projects
  • Troubleshoot technical problems, determine and execute resolution plans
  • Create and/or contribute to project scoping, planning, budgeting, and schedules
  • Independently researches broad, diverse, complex issues outside technical capability; selects most efficient methods/techniques to achieve objectives. Simultaneously handles multiple, demanding, unstructured assignments and solves complex high impact problems requiring expert specialized skill, multi-disciplinary knowledge, and basic business understanding. Responsibility includes definition, completion, technical quality, and securing consistency across assigned area(s)

Qualifications

  • Ph.D., preferably in Plastics Engineering, Material Science, Polymer Science or related field with exceptional academic achievements or relevant work experience or a M.S. degree with work experience and familiarity with polymer formulation and plastics processing technologies
  • Knowledgeable and hands on experience in extrusion methodologies such as single screw extrusion, twin screw extrusion, compounding, foaming, and tube extrusion
  • Knowledgeable and hands on experience in injection molding
  • Knowledgeable in process monitoring equipment for plastic processing
  • In-depth knowledge of polymeric materials, including material chemistry, physical properties, formulation, and/or processing, and in-depth knowledge of additives (fillers, plasticizers, flame retardants, antioxidants, etc.) for polymer composites
  • Understanding of polymer and composite material characterization techniques, such as DSC, TGA, DMA, rheology, Instron, chemical analysis, structural characterization through spectroscopy or scattering, etc., and understanding of structure-property relationships
  • Prior experience working in a R&D environment is preferred
  • Preferred CAD experience with AutoCAD, Pro/E, or SpaceClaim
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and guidance
  • A strong team player with a positive, proactive and professional attitude
  • Excellent communication skills, and excellent written / verbal / presentation skills
